I first noticed my attention span shrinking when I sat down to read a book that I was anticipating. I opened the first page, then INSTANTLY picked up my phone to check my social media for the fourth time.
This saddened me because I love to read! Getting lost in a good book is my favorite thing to do. So, naturally, I wanted to make a change.
Before making this change, I did an experiment on myself to see what my main distractions were. I also wanted to time my attention span to see the damage done that had been done.
After trying many methods, I chose these to bring to you because they were the most helpful to me. Feel free to try! I also left links below to helpful articles in case my methods don’t float your boat.
Meditation- Meditation helps with attention span retention because it helps you to train your mind to move around the senseless thoughts that steal our attention away from one particular task. Being in control of those senseless thoughts, aids us in truly seeking ourselves (our wants, desires, feelings, and purpose). As far as ambiance goes, I searched Youtube and Spotify for zen music. For energy cleansing purposes, I burned incense as well. Some people use burn sage if they can get their hands on it.
I will be posting about my meditation techniques soon in case you are interested 🙂
Challenge: I love a good challenge. When I realized that I would completely skip over simple things such as Facebook statuses or quotes on social media because they were “too long”, I knew there was a problem. After realizing this, I decided to disobey my urge to skim through reading. I challenged myself to read every single word. It may sound simple enough but this can reveal to be quite the task.
Limited television- HUGE! Just think about the conditioning the brain goes through to tune out commercials during an interesting show or movie. These commercials are fast and short, teaching our brains to shut off after about fifteen minutes of being engaged. I cut down tv time and instantly began seeing results.
Wow! You made it to the end of the post! I’m so proud of you!
I hope these techniques were useful to you, my loves. Life is so short, we should want to be present. We have the ultimate control over ourselves! Challenge yourself to do better in this world where everything is so instant!
Be well!
